from new york. i'm chris hayes. and i'm dressed this halloween as steve kornacki. we've got lots of politics tonight, starting at the white house, where you might have noticed, it's been something of a rough couple of weeks for the president. with the rocky rollout of his signature health reform law dominating the news, the political toll is real and it is getting worse. and nowhere is the damage more apparent than in the latest polling from nbc news, where president obama's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 42%. that is a five-point drop from just earlier this month. these numbers, as bad as they are, don't necessarily exist in a vacuum. there's a lot more complexity to the current political environment, which in many ways is the story of american politics in the tea party era. >> let's talk about the president. >> between syria, between the shutdown, between obama care, how are his approval numbers stacking up? >> record lows. >> the president's approval rating dropped five points. >> at an all-time low. >> is this more than just the second-term curse? >> if he g

kind of prophecy. alex bag -- your reaction to the news out of new jersey, steve? >> shocked. it's going to be a late night in new jersey because we're going to have to wait until mercer county comes in. the interesting thing here is to think back four years a to how chris christie got in that position anyway. christie's re-election over the inge couple bent, it had everything to do with jon corzine with how terrible his governorship had gone and the position of the republican party is nothing but the protest vehicle for voters who were feeling economic anxiety. tonight chris christie's re-election has everything to do with chris christie, and nothing to do with his democratic opponent. it has a little bit of the -- but chris christie, think about this, in winning tonight, and i'm guessing, we'll see what the final margin is, it's probably going to be in the range of 20 points, maybe a little bit bigger. not since 1985, before tonight had a republican won a state wide election in new jersey and got more than 30% of the vote. that's the territory he's in right now. >> you took the

until next year. democratic congressman steve cohen from tennessee voted no on that bill. congressman, good to see you. first of all, let me start with that vote, why did you vote no? >> because it basically took apart the heart of the affordable care act. it said all these subprime insurance policies that people had that they still want could be sold to new people who didn't have them. that guts the whole idea of keeping your children on your insurance until they're 26, no co-pays for preventative carcare -- it eliminates all that stuff. basically it scratches it and goes back to fend for yourself medicine which is what the gop advocates. >> how much of this do you think is about a sincere desire to try and fix this thing and how much of this is about just continuing to try and repeal and replace it, trying to gut it? >> i think the republicans in the congress really are against the concept of the affordable care act and they have been against it ever since bob dole and mitt romney finished dealing with it and making it their plan. once it became somebody else's plan, they were again
